What Is an Early Pickup Note?
An early pickup note is a written request from a parent or guardian asking a school to release their child before the normal end of the school day. Schools typically require advance written notice to coordinate a safe, authorized early release.
Whether it's a doctor's appointment, an important family commitment, or a travel departure, a well-written pickup note makes the process smooth for everyone — teacher, office staff, and your child.
When to Use an Early Pickup Note
- Medical or dental appointments during school hours
- Orthodontist, specialist, or therapy appointments
- Family travel that requires leaving midday
- Religious or cultural observances
- Situations where a trusted adult other than the parent is picking up
Dear Mr. Davis,
I am writing to let you know that I will need to pick up Marcus early from school on Wednesday, February 7th. He has an orthodontist appointment at 2:00 PM, and I expect to arrive at school around 1:30 PM to sign him out at the front office.
Marcus will be responsible for completing any assignments he misses during the final period of the day. If there is anything specific you'd like him to bring home, please let us know.
Thank you for your help in arranging this.
Sincerely,
David Carter

Always notify the school's front office directly — not just the teacher. Most schools require you to sign your child out in person. Include your phone number so staff can reach you if needed.
